テクノロジーの発展や社会基盤の見直しで、我々を取り巻く環境が目まぐるしく変化する現代において「心と身体が繋がっている」という認識は以前よりも重要度を増している。“責任”という社会的な役割を誰しもが担うこの社会では、感情を抑えながら生きることに無自覚なまま日常を送ることはある種、常識として成立している。しかしそういった暗黙の了解は、本来結びつくべき「心」と「身体」の繋がりを断絶する。社会における変化の中で、心と身体を一体とするその“何か”を再発見する局面に我々はいるのだ。
The connection between human body and mind is recognized with the development of technology and changes in our social environment nowadays in modern life. Each of us plays a social role and has different responsibilities within our society. Being unconscious of our feelings is understood as common sense. It ultimately breaks the connection between our body and mind. Rediscovering that connection which unites our mind and body is what needs to be done within this constantly changing world.
本作の主人公となる71歳のフラメンコダンサー ラ・チャナは、人の手を借りずに立ち上がることさえできない。椅子に座り額に汗をにじませながら舞う姿をカメラは捉える。しかしその足は“サパテアード”と呼ばれる、他の誰にも真似が出来ない彼女だけのリズムを刻む。驚くほど速いスピード、コントロールされたスタッカートの強弱、そしてその活力と創造性で、座ったままフラメンコが持つ野生の美しさそのものとなる。
『私の身体の中にはコンパスがあるの』。彼女の言うコンパスとはフラメンコにおけるリズムのこと。例え踊り手の動きが止まったように見えても、根底に流れているコンパスを頼りに再び踊り始めることが出来る。無音の中で流れ続けるコンパスを踊り手・歌い手・ギタリストが感じ一体となるさまはフラメンコの醍醐味だ。
La Chana, the 71-years-old leading character of the film, could not even stand up without people’s help. Dancing with sweat while sitting on a chair, La Chana was captured by the camera. However,the movement of her legs were called “Zapateado” by people has her own rhythm that can no be imitated. The beauty of the wild flamenco is within her astonishing speed, highly controlled strength, vitality and creativity even while sitting down.
“The compass is within my own body.” The compass is rhythm of flamenco. Even if the dancer seems to stop the movement, the dance is still alive from the compass underlying. It is the real pleasure to feel the compass as she dances as a dancer, a singer and a guitarist.
ラ・チャナことアントニア・サンディアゴ・アマドールはバルセロナのヒターノ社会に生まれた。ヒターノとはスペイン語で移動民族（ジプシー）を指す言葉で、定住を嫌う彼らは他の民族との混血を避け民族としてのオリジナリティを守り続けた。スペイン人への同化政策を目論む政府はヒターノを迫害し続け、虐げられた彼らが嘆きや心の声を込めた歌と踊りがフラメンコとなった。フラメンコが“魂の叫び”と呼ばれるゆえんは、ヒターノたちが虐げられる中で彼らに許された唯一の言語そのものであるからだ。
幼いラ・チャナもフラメンコに夢中になっていった。「芸は女にとって不健全だ」と言う父の目を盗みながら、ラジオに合わせ誰にも見られぬように踊った。誰に習うことも出来ず独学でフラメンコを習得していった彼女は、もともとのステップを独自に改革していき、唯一無二の踊り手となる。その創造性で若くして人々を魅了したが、フラメンコダンサーとしての彼女の行く先を制限したのもヒターノ社会だった。家父長制と男尊女卑の伝統は彼らの文化に深く根差し、今も女性たちにはさまざまな制限が課せられている。すでに一流ダンサーとしてハリウッドから注目されていたラ・チャナも例外ではないどころか、夫の嫉妬を買ったことで踊ることすら許されなくなってしまった。
La Chana, Antonia Santiago Amador was born in Barcelona’s Gypsy society. It refers to a Spanish ethnic group which could not get used to settlement in one place and avoided mixing races with other ethnic groups. They got persecuted due to the policies of national assimilation made by the government. Flamenco is called the “Cry out from the soul” since it is the way they express their outrageous feelings towards their life. It is the only language they are allowed.
Young La Chana was crazy about flamenco. Even though her father believed that art is unhealthy for woman, she learned to dance to the radio without letting others knows. She self taught herself with original steps and styles which was she reformed conventional one and became the one and only dancer. Though her creativity attracted a lot of people, The Patriarchal traditions of Barcelona’s Gypsy society had a huge impact on her life as a dancer. Those patriarchal traditions and discrimination against women are rooted in their society, and it still limit women’s right even now.La Chana earned attention from Hollywood as a leading dancer but got suspended because of the jealous of her husband.
『踊るために生きていた私にとって踊りを禁じられたのは、魂を奪われたも同じだった』。
それからは絶望と困窮に陥いり、夫の暴力の下まるで檻に入れられた囚人のような生活を過ごした。
しかしフラメンコから遠ざかったのち夫との別れを機に、7年の歳月を経て再び舞台を踏むこととなった。何者にも彼女の身体の根底にあるコンパスの流れを止めることは出来なかったのである。止まったように見えた踊り手は、再びステップを踏み始めた。
71歳のラ・チャナは、現在の夫と彼女の娘、孫と食卓のパエリアを囲む。糖尿病を患いながら、そんなことおかまいなしと言ったように孫の分のアイスクリームまで手を付けようとして娘に叱られている。そして、夫に心配されながら舞台袖で血糖値を測った後に、舞うのだ。その身体は確かに老いている一方で、苦痛と情熱の末に見つけた“心のままに踊ること”への喜び、そして人生そのものがパトスとなって身体からほとばしる。
「フラメンコに出身地は関係ない。ただし、自分の中から出てこなければダメよ。まず自分の中にフラメンコがなければ」と彼女は言う。
自分だけが持つコンパスに従いながら心と身体と人生を一体させて踊るラ・チャナのフラメンコそのものとしての生き方は、我々に“何か”を再発見させる。
“It is like my soul has been taken away to be forbidden to dance.”
She suffered from despair and penury as she spent her life as a prisoner to her husband. However, when her husband left, she decided to step on the stage again after 7 years apart from flamenco. It was impossible for anyone to stop the compass from working within her own body. The dancer could not be stopped.
La Chana, at the age of 71, is surrounded by her present husband , daughter and grandchildren. Her daughter stopped her from having ice-cream since she has diabetes ,but she doesn’t care. She danced while being over by her husband after having her blood-sugar level measured. Even though her body is getting old, she found the pleasure for “the body follows the soul” after many years of effort and passion. Her life is all about that.
“It has nothing to do with where it comes from. It has to come out from within yourself. You have to have flamenco within yourself.” She says.
The way of life like that The compass is within her own body and her connection between her body and mind as she dances flamenco makes us rediscovered “something”.

結婚、出産、キャリアの頂点での引退、どん底からの復帰と、迫りくる老い——現在71歳 、伝説のフラメンコダンサー、ラ・チャナの波乱の人生と情熱の源に迫る。
若くしてその才能を開花させたラ・チャナ（本名アントニア・サンティアゴ・アマドール）は、18歳で結婚・出産。夫がマネージャーとなりフラメンコダンサーの活動をつづけた。ダリを魅了し、映画『無責任恋愛作戦』で共演したピーター・セラーズにハリウッドに招かれるも、封建的なヒターノ（ジプシー）社会で女性が自らの意見を言うことは許されず、彼女がハリウッドに進出することはなかった。その後も彼女の人気は衰えることを知らず、テレビ出演や世界ツアーなど、全てのアーテストが目指す頂点にいたラ・チャナだったが、ある日突然、表舞台から姿を消した。
本作では、彼女をとりまく状況を丁寧に解き明かしていく。結婚、出産、キャリアの頂点での引退、男性社会で女性が活躍することの難しさ、家庭内暴力、そしてどん底からの復帰と、人生を共に歩む運命の相手との出会い、迫りくる老い――ラ・チャナの人生は困難に満ちたものだったかもしれない。しかし、絶望すら受け入れ前に進む強さを彼女は教えてくれる。画面からあふれださんばかりのパワフルな踊りとチャーミングな人柄、そして生み出す言葉の一つ一つが私たちを魅了する。
