アート、音楽、ファッションーーLAカルチャーが再び注目を集めているなか、NeoLではLAを拠点として活躍する女性クリエイターに焦点を当て、それぞれのキャリアや作品について、そして都市の魅力を聞く小特集を敢行。第五弾はBrain Deadの仕事に携わりながら犬用ベッド、マイクロブレーディングなど様々なジャンルに挑戦をしているJules Wongをピックアップ。
– LAにはどれくらい住んでいるの?
Jules「LAに住んで約3年になるわ」
– LAのどの場所、または、どんなところが好き？
Jules「グリフィスパークが大好き。すごく大きくて、4000エーカー以上の場所に色んなアクティビティーができるスポットがたくさんあって。片側では展望台まで登ることができるし、飼っている犬がKyleがスケボーするのを眺めている間、私は芝生の上で読書したりもできるし。ピクニックして、自分たちのバトミントンネットを張ることもできちゃうのよ。メリーゴーランドも電車の乗り物もあるし、動物園まであるの！まさに最高の場所！」
– LAではどんな仕事をしているの？
Jules「今年始めまでメンズ服屋のバイヤーをしていたんだけど、週5日、常にデスクに縛られているのは私の独創力が制限されてるような気がしたし、私が一生やり続けたいと思う事とはかけ離れているなと感じたから、その仕事を辞めて私のフィアンセ(Brain Deadのディレクター Kyle Ng)のビジネスの手伝いを始めたのよ。と同時に、他に何か私に出来ることがないか模索し始めたの。そこから、私の人生の道が本当に開き始めた気がしたわ。今まで自分になじみのない、存在している事さえ知らなかったアートや異文化、不思議なものなどに触れる機会に恵まれているの。まだBrain Deadのお手伝いはしているけど、様々なアーティストと面白いデザインを取り入れた犬用ベッドの開発をしたりもしてるのよ！それと、今ちょうどマイクロブレーディング（1本ずつ自然に眉毛を描く新しいアイブロータトゥーの技法）を学び始めて、それが今一番チャレンジングなことかな！」
– 今の仕事のどんな部分が好き?
Jules「Brain Deadの仕事は、KyleとEdのデザインが実際に仕上がっていく様子を見るのがすごく好き。二人は、8000マイル(LAとMelbourneの距離)も離れていても、全てちゃんとこなしてしまうんだから。彼らの仕事っぷりにはインスパイアされまくりよ。犬用ベッドのプロジェクトは、クリエイティブな部分で広がりがあるからとても楽しいわ。特に、今まで見てきた犬用ベッドは、パッとしないものばかりだったから。マイクロブレーディングについては、これが私の天職じゃないかなと思っているの。技術をマスターするのはすごく難しいけど一番やりがいがあるんじゃないかなと個人的に思っていて。この眉毛の技術で少しずつ世界が変わっていったらいいな！」
– ちなみにどうして犬用ベッドの開発をしようと思ったの?
Jules「数ヶ月前に保護犬をむかえて、その時に犬用ベッドを探したんだけど、面白いデザインのベッドが全くなかったの。ベッドタウンに埋もれてしまったようなありきたりの柄の、両親の家にあるようなちょっとイケてない見た目のものしかなかった。(笑) それに、私と同じように感じている人達が沢山いると気付いたから、犬用ベッドを作り出すというアイディアが思い浮かんだのよ」
– マイクロブレーディングに関しては、顧客のために自分自身で眉毛のデザインをするの？
Jules「ええ！それぞれの人の顔の寸法や好みの要素から、理想の眉毛を描く方法を学んだわ。顧客は、その人にピッタリなデザインを得ることが出来るのよ。私は常に美容業界に関心があって、永久的なボディーアートに関してもすごく興味があったの（*マイクロブレーディングは半永久的）。だから、私にとってマイクロブレーディングはとてもしっくりきたの。眉毛は人の顔にすごく影響を与える箇所で、ちょっと言い過ぎかもしれないけど、眉毛が生え揃わなかったりムラがあるのがコンプレックスだった人たちにもっと自信を与えることができるし、メイクという朝の一手間を減らすことができるし、誰かの人生を変えることができるんじゃないかなと思っているわ」
– あなたのフィアンセであるKyleからのアイデアやアドバイスを取り入れたりする?
Jules「ええ、と答えたいけど、そうじゃないかも……。しょっちゅうKyleに反抗してる！(笑) でも、実際のところ、彼は私に色々教えてくれようとするけど、私は直感的にそれをはねのけて、でもそのうち彼の言ってる事は正しかったと気付くハメになるのよね(笑)」
– LAのどんなところが好き?
Jules「今住んでいるSilver Lakeが大好き！ 以前はHollywoodに住んでいたんだけど、通りが本当に混んでいてあまり出かけたりしなかったわね。Silver Lakeは魅力的で素晴らしいコミュニティがあるのよ」
– LAのオススメは?
Jules「『Belcampo』(レストラン)!!! 以前は 『In-N-Out』バーガーが一番と思っていたけど、『Belcampo』は全てにおいて最高よ！」

– How long have you lived in LA.
I’ve been in LA for almost 3 years!
– Where/What part are you in love with LA?
I love Griffith Park. It is GIGANTIC and there are sooo many different pockets for activities over the 4000+ acres. On one side I can hike up to the Observatory, or I can read on the grass while the dog watches Kyle skates. We can also picnic and set up our own badminton net. There is also a merry-go-round, train rides, and even a zoo. It’s amazing!!
– What do you do for work in LA?
I was a buyer for a men’s clothing store up until the new year. But my creative control was somewhat limited and being confined to a desk 5 days a week wasn’t really something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. So I decided to quit my job and help my fiancé (Director for Brain Dead) with his business, but at the same time I started to explore what other options were out there for me.
From there on, I feel like my world really started to open up! I was being exposed to more kinds of art, different content, and also weird stuff that I didn’t even know existed. Fast forward to now, I still help with Brain Dead, but am working on developing dog beds that will feature various awesome artists and interesting designs.
In addition, I am just learning how to do micro-blading (tattoo hair-strokes for the eyebrow) which has been the most challenging thing yet!
– How / which part do you like about your work?
With Brain Dead, I love watching Kyle and Ed’s designs come to life – despite being 8000 miles apart they get shit done. It’s inspiring for me. The dog beds project is fun because there is so much room for creativity, especially since all the ones we’ve seen out there are really lackluster. As for micro-blading, I think it might be my calling. It is extremely difficult to master but I personally feel like it will be the most rewarding. Hopefully I can change the world one eyebrow at a time.
– Do you sometimes or often take the idea or advice from your partner / husband/ boyfriend(トルツメ) ?
As much as I would like to say yes, this is not true – I am constantly pushing back against Kyle! hahaha. but in reality, whenever he tries to tell me something, my first instinct is to resist, but then realize that he was right all along. hahaa
– How come you started developing dog beds? (Because you have dogs living together and noticed something?)(トルツメ)
We rescued a dog a couple months ago, and so I was shopping for dog beds for our home, but found that there were none with interesting designs! Everything looked like it belonged in my mom’s house or something haha – just very suburban and basic patterns. I figured there are a lot of people running across similar issues, thus sparked the dog bed idea!
– As for micro-blading, do you design the eyebrow for the client (customer)(トルツメ)?( In that case do you get any inspiration or idea from something for doing this for others?)(トルツメ)
Yes! I have learned how to draw the “ideal” brow for each person, based on their measurements and factoring in preferences as well. Therefore, each client gets their own personal “design” based on what works for them.
I have always been interested in the beauty industry as well as permanent body art (micro-blading is actually semi-permanent), therefore micro-blading seemed like the perfect pocket to fit myself into. I feel that eyebrows can really affect a person’s overall face, and I know it sounds a little extreme but I hope I can change people’s lives either by making them more confident due to sparseness or unevenness or simply just by reducing their time to get ready in the morning.
– Where/What part are you in love with LA?
I currently live in Silver Lake and I love it ! We were living in Hollywood before and I didn’t go out often because it was so hectic out in the streets. Silver Lake is charming and a great community to be in!
– Any recommends in LA?
Belcampo (restaurant)!!!! I always thought In-N-Out was the best burger….but Belcampo rules everything!
