アートブックを眺めていると時間が経つのがあっという間。写真、グラフィック、ペイント、様々な表現方法で埋め尽くされた紙面は、私たちを脳内トリップに導いてくれる。良質なアートブックの作り手たちはどんなことを考えてモノづくりしているのだろう。そして彼ら自身はどんな作品をセレクトして購入しているのだろう。良質なブックが集まることで知られるサンフランシスコアートブックフェアに参加した東京の出版レーベル「commune」が、アートブックフェアへの参加方法などを含めたフェアのレポート、参加しているパブリッシャーたちへのインタビューを行ってくれた。第五回目は、DIYコミュニティと連携した出版レーベルUnity Pressを紹介する。
– あなたが運営するパブリッシャーについて教えてください。
僕らの出版レーベルはUnity Pressといって出版をメインとする集団で、友人達や尊敬するアーティスト達のジンをリリースするためにあるんだ。あと、クィア、パンク、POC（people of color＝有色人たち）やDIYコミュニティーの人達と一緒に連携して動けるよう努めているよ。（https://www.unityzines.com/）
– なぜArt Book Fairに参加するのですか？
ここ数年間のうち参加したいくつかのアートブックフェアでは、世界中から僕らと同じ考えを持った人達と出会う事ができてとても楽しい経験をしてるんだ。また、他のパブリッシャーや自主出版社がどういう動きをしているか知るのにもとても良い機会なんだ。SFABFに参加するのは二度目だけど、会場が家から近いので大して移動しなくていいので最高だよ！でも、Art Book Fairに参加するために色々な国や街に旅するのも楽しくて、それもフェアに参加する理由の一つだね。
– SFABF17で新しくリリースしたものはありますか？
今回のフェアではいくつかの新しいタイトルをリリースしたよ。一つはVivian Fuの“Salty Tooth”という親密な関係のポートレイトに焦点をあてたフォトジンと僕の“Forget About the Boys”という女の子の絵ばかりを集めたイラストレーションジンも新しく作ったんだ。 あと、Brontez Purnellの“Fag School #1”というジンの再発行もしたんだ。“Fag School”はBrontezが25年くらい前に始めた性的経験、AVレビュー、クィアパンクス達のへのインタビューなどを載せたクィアジンだよ。
– SFABF17でお気に入りだったブースは？
communeブースはもちろん最高だったよ！Tiny Splendorはいつも素晴らしいものをリリースしているし、 Endless Editions、Eggy Press、Extra Vitamins、Rollo Pressなどももちろん最高だし、フェアではなかなか会えない友人達にも会えるからすごく嬉しいよ。来年はクィアやPOCパブリッシャー達がフェアでもっとフィーチャーされるといいなと思ってるよ！
– SFABF17で何かジンやブックを購入しましたか？
ブックフェアはいつも忙しくて他のブースを見て回る時間がいつもないけど、いくつかのカッコいいものを見つけたりはするよ。Phillip Loscaの美しいコラージュを集めた“Exquisite Corpse”は今回見つけたもののうちの一つなんだ。
– 次のプランは何ですか？
9月のNYABFに参加する予定でその際に何か新作をリリースすると予定だけど、僕らが今一番時間をかけているLGBTQのスケーター達とのプロジェクトに取り組んでいるよ。

We use Unity Press as a way to publish our own zines, our friends, as well as artists we admire. We strive to work with people in the queer, punk, POC (people of color), and DIY communities.
– Why do you participate in Art Book Fairs?
In the last few years we have participated in several art book fairs and have really enjoyed meeting like-minded people from all over the world. It is also a fun opportunity for us to check out what other publishers and independent presses are doing. This is the second SF Art Book Fair and we also love it since we are close to home and we don’t need to do any traveling! Although, traveling is fun too and it is a big part of why we enjoy going to fairs.
– What is your newest titles?
We have a several new titles that we released at the fair, one was a new photo zine, “Salty Tooth”, from Vivian Fu featuring portraits of intimacy. I have a new illustration zine of drawings of all girls called, “Forget About the Boys”. We did a reissue of Brontez Purnell’s “Fag School #1” zine. “Fag School” is a queer zine he started about a decade ago about sexual encounters, porn reviews, and interviews with queer punx.
– Tables you like at SF Art Book Fair 2017 ?
We loved the Commune table of course! Tiny Splendor always has awesome stuff, Endless Editions, Eggy Press, Extra Vitamins, Rollo Press, etc. Of course, it’s always good to see our friends. We would love to see more queer and brown publishers featured at the next one!
– Did you get any zines/books at SFABF17?
The book fairs are always so hectic and we never have as much time as we’d like to really look around, but we were able to pick up a few cool things. One book in particular is a beautiful series of collages titled “Exquisite Corpse” by Phillip Iosca. (pictures attached)
– What is your next plan?
We’ll be at the New York Art Book Fair next month and we will probably have something new for that, but we are mostly working on our project for LGBTQ skateboarders which has been taking up most of our time.
