──旅と同様に渚さんが惹かれるものとして、鉱物があります。ジュエリーラインのMAIDENを始めたのは元々鉱物好きというのもありました？
金子「あったと思います。貝や石が好きだったから、それらを取り入れたジュエリーを作るのは自然な流れでしたし、ネイルから手元全体をデザインしたいという想いもありました。2012年の冬から始めたんですが、パートナーが彫金師で、材木屋の息子だから家具でもなんでも作れるんです。DISCOのディスプレイも作ってくれていて。ものを作ってる人とデザインする私で一緒に仕事をしたかったので、私から彼に言ってMAIDENを作りました。彼は私の好きなものをすごくわかろうとしてくれるので、三歩先をいくデザインを出してくれたりするのも面白いです。一緒に生活してるから見てるものは似るけど、生まれ育ったところや根本的な感覚が違うので捉え方が違ったり。それが重なり合うのも面白いなって。デザインの締切日を決めて『せーの』で出し合ってます（笑）」
──MAIDENは渚さんだけでなく、旦那さんとのコミュニケーションで作り上げているものだったんですね。ネイルもお客さんの意見を汲み取って作る、いわばオートクチュールのようなもの。渚さんはきっと交流しあって作るものが好きなんですね。
金子「そうですね。人とコミュニケーションをとるのが元から好きだし、お客さん半分私半分のデザインを作るのが好きなんです。お客さんの意思は全て汲み取りたいし、でもそれだけじゃつまらないから私の意思も入れて、かつその人に合う色を選びたい」
──うん、施術の時は全身で聞いているというのを感じます。
金子「人の顔色を見るような察知力は小さいころからあると思います。『今、この人はこういう風に言ってほしいんだな』とか。それは斜めからの目線じゃなく、本当に心の中で自然と思っているんですが、仕事の時はそれがよりハードに動くし、訓練されていったんでしょうね。ちょっと違う色を入れた時は顔色でわかるので、『直せるから何でも言ってね』と言ったり。防衛本能が働くというか、忙しい時ほど念入りにアートの説明をしたり、想像できないと言われたら実際に自分の手に簡単に作ってみたりして、自分のデザインを入れたいからこそ入念にチェックしているんだと思います」
──瞬時に想像しながら相手の意見をキャッチする、すごい仕事だと思います。
金子「私は10本の中のストーリーを自分の中で決めてから施術を始めるんですが、猛烈な勢いで次のことを考えているし、頭の中は機械みたいな動きをしていますね。でも毎回、最後に1個の作品が出来上がるから、そこが楽しいところで。意見を聞くというのも、きっと私は本来は人見知りなタイプで、だからこそコミュニケーションを大切にしたいというのがあって。相手と自分互いの意思を尊重しながら独創的な絵を描くーーネイリストはまさに天職だと思っています」
──As same as traveling, Ms. Nagisa feel drawn to mineral. Since you originally like mineral, did you start MAIDEN of Jewelry Line?
Kaneko “I think so. I love beautiful shells and stones so making jewelries by using these things follow naturally and I had a desire to design whole hands from nails. I started it since the winter of 2014 and my business partner was a goldsmith and he could make anything including furniture because he was born in a house of lumber dealer. He also made a display of DISCO. As a designer, I want to work together with manufacturing personnel so I suggested him to make MAIDEN and start it. It’s interesting for me that he makes every effort to understand what I like and makes designs which go three steps ahead. Since we live together, we see almost same things, but our reaction is not same because of our different background and different senses. It also brings us fun that we combine these differences. We have set the deadline of design, and we show our own design on the count of three (laughs).”
──MAIDEN is made by not only you but also the communication with your husband. Nail arts are also made of understanding customer’s feeling, it is, so to speak, haute couture. So Ms. Nagisa likes making something with good communication each other, right?
Kaneko “Yes. I originally like to communicate with others and I like to make a design by halves with customers and me. I want to understand all of customer’s feeling, but it’s not enough. So I mix it with my idea and choose well-matched colors for customer.”
──I have felt that you listen with whole body during treatment.
Kaneko “From childhood, I have had a sharp observation, such as ‘now, this person wants me to say in this way.’ It is not sarcastic view, but it is that I naturally feel it in my heart. And during my working, the ability works very hard and it has been trained. When I use different colors which differ from customer’s feeling, I notice it through her facial expression, so in that case I try to say ‘it’s easy to repair, tell me anything’. It’s kind of protective instinct, I give careful explanation about art if I’m very busy and I simply draw it on my nail if customers say that the art can’t be imagined. So, I think I’m checking very carefully in order to use my design.”
──You receive customer’s opinion with imagination in a instant, I think it’s a marvelous job.
Kaneko “Although I decide 10 stories in my mind before the start of treatment, I’m always thinking the following at a furious speed so my brain is working like machine. But finally, I can create one of the work and I feel satisfaction. Since I might be originally shy, I listen to opinions of customers and cherish the communication. I believe that God has called me to manicurist because I can show respect for both wills with customers and me, and draw creative pictures.”
