ばたばたしてました。寒さが厳しくなってきたロンドンからこんにちは。
ハローウィンが終わった後、１１月５日は日本ではなじみのない記念日Guy Fawkes Nightです。Guy Fawkesとは1605年ウェストミンスター宮殿内にある議事堂の爆破および国王の爆殺の実行責任者として知られる人物。結局事件は未遂に終わり、Guy Fawkesは逮捕、ウェストミンスターのオールド・パレス・ヤードにて、「Hanged, drawn and quartered（首吊り・内臓抉り・四つ裂きの刑）」という悲惨な刑にかけられるのですが（考えただけでも恐ろしい処刑法。。）この火薬陰謀事件にちなんで、１１月５日は花火を上げ、たき火をたくという習慣ができたみたいです。この日は、Bonfire Night、 Firework Nightともよばれていて、イギリス、そしてロンドンのいろんな場所で花火のイベントがあり、どこかしこから花火や爆竹の音がするお祭りモード。私は花火の音だけでも、テンションあがっちゃってました。
Guy Fawkesという人物は「抵抗と匿名の国際的シンボル」としてキャラクター化されているようで、‘Million Mask March’ というFawkesの仮面を被った人たちにより、大規模なデモ行進も各地で行われてたみたいです。そもそも失敗を記念するってどこか矛盾してる気もしますが、市民が権力へ反逆する気持ちは今も昔も変わらない、ってことでしょうね。何となくイギリス人のメンタリティーが分かる、興味深いイベントだなと思ってます。

映画『Vフォー・ヴェンデッタ』で有名になったGuy Fawkes Mask.
I was bit hectic. The weather is seriously cold here in London.
On 5th of November, just after Halloween, there is an anniversary called Guy Fawkes Night which is unfamiliar in Japan. Guy Fawkes is a guy who planned the failed Gunpowder Plot of blowing up the parliament and killing the king and caught guarding a cache of explosives placed beneath the House of Lords in 1605. He was subject to capital punishment of’Hanged, drawn and quartered’.(Such a terrible execution…if I think of it.) Anyway 5 November has variously been called Guy Fawkes Night,and have fireworks display and bonfires that based on gunpowder plot. The day also called Bonfire Night or Fireworks Night, and so many places in England and London hold the fireworks display. With the sound of fireworks and firecrackers, you might feel like if you are in the festival or something. The sound of firework made me hight enough even just the sound.
Guy Fawkes is characterized as an international symbol of ‘revolt and anonymity’, and there were demonstration by people with the Fawkes masks called ‘Million Mask March’ in many places on the same day. It’s sounds bit paradoxical to celebrate a day of failure but the people’s feeling of the rebellion towards the power is same even now.
For me this interesting event tells a lot about the mentality of English.
