日暮里の新たなアートスペースとして注目を集める脱衣所にて2月10日(金)~2月16日(木)「クィアな地平線 Queer Horizons」が開催。
本展ではアーティスト達の眼差しを介して様々なクィアな地平線に目を向け、複数のオルタナティブかつ抵抗的な未来を垣間見る。作品はそれぞれ、特定のクィアな体験や存在に触れ、破壊的あるいは不協和な実践や在り方に焦点を当てる。
本展のタイトルは、ホセ・エステバン=ムニョスによる「存在の地平線(horizon of being)」と いったクィア性の定義に由来する。「存在の地平線」とは現在におけるユートピア的な絆、繋がり、デザイン、ジェスチャーを通して未来に視線を向ける不確かな状態である。地平線を見据えるということは「ここ」ではない場所に目を向けるということだ。地平線を求めるということは即ち、クィアな時空間を生み出すために既存の時空間の可能性に着目するということだ。
キュンチョメによる映像作品「声枯れるまで」では、トランスやジェンダークィアの人々にインタビューをし、現代社会において名前を変えるということの複雑さについて考察する。登場人物達 は自らつけた「新しい名前」を共に叫ぶ。その新しい名前の叫声は、それぞれが自分自身で創造した新しい地平に向かって届けているかのようだ。
ジェイミー・ヤンコヴィッチとセマーン・ペトラの両作品では、ゲーム空間やアニメーションの領 域に入り込む。ヤンコヴィッチの作品『A Woman on the Internet (or, The Eternal Scream)』は、 ゲーム内のクィア/トランスのプレイヤーや移動する者がどのように解放を見出せるかを探求する旅である。一方、セマーンのインタラクティブ・ゲーム『来たるセカイの形』では、ジェンダークィア/トランス*の欲望が、まだ定義されていない未来の在り方と空間をどのように提示できるかを 探る。クィア・アイデンティティーに内在する抵抗に着想を得ているノマドによるパフォーマンスとインスタレーションは、クィアな体験の中に解放の場を見出す。
明日少女隊のアーティスト・フィルム「男女二元論を超えて」は女性用と男性用の山道がある日本の山でのパフォーマンスを記録したものだ。トランスジェンダー・ノンバイナリー当事者のつく る・フォルスさんと共に、明日少女隊はどちらの道も選ばず、岩やシダ、生い茂る薮の中を歩き、「男坂」と「女坂」の間にある道を切り開く。この行為は抵抗の意志を表している。男女二元論を押し付けるこの社会に疑問を持ち、生き残るため、そして未来を形作るために、新しい道を自ら生み出す姿を、パフォーマンスで表現する。
本展の作品群は、様々な異なる視点から「クィアな地平線」といったテーマに取り組んでいる。しかしそれらすべての作品は、オルタナティブな在り方を記録し、掘り下げようとする点で一致して いる。また、アーティストたちはまだ実現していないよりクィアなリアリティに焦点を当てている。
現在における想像と希望によって、既成の在り方ではない未来に目を向けた新しい世界と生き方を創造することが可能なのだ。

In this exhibition we look through artists’ eyes onto multiple horizons and towards alternate, resistant and queer futures. The works in the show touch on specific queer experiences and queer modes of perception and experience, particularly leaning towards disruptive or dissonant practices and ways of being.
The title of the exhibition draws on José Esteban Muñoz’s definition of queerness as a “horizon of being”, an elusive and future-facing state that can be glimpsed through the utopian bonds, affiliations, designs and gestures that exist within the present. To face the horizon is to face a place and position that is not here – and to seek the horizon is to focus on the capacity of the “here and now” for producing a different, queerer “there and then”.
In both Jamie Janković and Petra Szemán’s work, we enter into game-spaces and animated realms. In Janković’s work “A Woman on the Internet (or, The Eternal Scream)” this is a journey into how queer/trans players and travellers in games can find liberation; while Szemán’s interactive game The shape of worlds to come explores ways in which genderqueer/trans* desire might offer as yet-undefined future spaces of being. Drawing energy from the resistance inherent within queer identities, gnomad’s performance and installation for “Queer Horizons” finds within queer experience a site of liberation.
Tomorrow Girls Troop’s artist film in this show “Beyond Binary” documents a recorded performance where they travel to a mountain shrine in Japan that has an “Onna-zaka” (women’s path) and an “Otoko-zaka” (men’s path). Together with Tsukuru Fors, a transgender and non-binary participant, they choose to take neither path and instead walk through the rocks, ferns and dense undergrowth to carve out a middle path between the men’s and women’s paths. This act of resistance poses questions to a society that continues to impose a gender binary and instead offers a vision for alternate ways for us to survive and shape our own futures in society today.
The works in Queer Horizons approach the subject from many differing perspectives, but in our view are all united in their desire to document and dissect alternative ways of being, the artists fixing their gaze on queerer realities that have not yet come to be. Through imagination and hope in the present, it is possible to create new future-facing worlds and lives outside of preconceived models of existence.
