バルセロナ在住のペインター、アドリアナ・オリバーが日本初個展「ORDINARY PEOPLE」をGALLERY TARGETにて、2019年12月3日から19日まで開催する。
アドリアナ・オリバーはホップアートを着想源とし、大胆なカラフルな作風で知られる写真家としてのキャリアも持つアーティスト。作品ではミニマリストの抽象化と即時性、動きを捉える作風に加え、ポップアートのジャンルにフェミニストの要素を取り込み、シンボルを観察、最小限のニュートラルな形に分解することで、ジェンダーの役割とステレオタイプを表現している。
今回は、50年代、60年代の古き良き日常の雰囲気を感じさせる人々をテーマに、表情を持たないポートレートを通じて、カジュアルでフラットな表現に仕上げている。男性からはダンディズムを、女性からは豊麗な印象を感じさせる。レイヤーやシェイプを最小限に使用し、あまり多くを明らかにせず、観客が中立的な空間でこれらの象徴的なシンボルを観察し、反映する空間を作り出している個展となっている。フィルム写真の作品やシネマトグラフィーの様な仕上がりになっているオリジナル作品にも注目。
アーティストステイトメント：
アーティスティックな家族に囲まれ、幼い頃から自己表現は日常的な事であり、今までの経験は全て幼少時代の芸術的なインキュベーターのクリエイティビティと絡み合っていました。
私は人生を芸術と切り離せないものとして見つめて育ちました。それは、その即時性と反射的な形で世界を捉える能力のために最初に写真の媒体に惹かれました。私の写真作品は、ポップアートの歴史から影響を受け始め、ペイントに移行しました。画家としての私の現在の仕事により、視覚的にボールドで大胆な表現ができ、写真よりもニュアンスのある物語を作成できるようになりました。キャンバス上の原色の帯では、物語や動きを暗示する形や線を表現的に使用することで、絵を最も強力で本質的な形に分解します。
私の主題は、50年代と60年代の映画の写真、多文化主義の研究、ジェンダー研究の影響を受けています。私は、伝統的な性別の構成を表す記号表現と文字を分解することにより、女性らしさと男らしさを探求します。意図的にレイヤーやシェイプを最小限に使用してあまり多くを明らかにしないことで、私の絵画は、観客が中立的な空間でこれらの象徴的なシンボルを観察し、反映するための空間を作り出します。

This is Oliver’s first solo show in Japan and the concept is, a representation of portraits of ordinary people. A way to reflect the most casual and ordinary with a wink in the 50’s and 60’s, like analog photography and cinematographic
Artist statement:
Growing up within a family nucleus of artists, artistic self-expression was an intrinsic part of daily life from a young age and all my experiences were intertwined with creativity in the artistic incubator of my childhood.
I grew up viewing life as inseparable from art, which first drew me to the medium of photography for its immediacy and ability to capture the world in reflective form. My photographic work began to take on influences from the history of Pop Art and I then transitioned to paint. My current work as a painter allows me to articulate figurative forms in ways that are visually bold, yet create more nuanced narrative than photography. In swaths of primary color on canvas, I break images down to their most powerful, essential forms through an expressive use of shape and line that hint at story and movement.
My subject matter is influenced by cinematographic pictures from the 50’s and 60’s, the research studies in multiculturalism and gender studies. I often explore femininity and masculinity by breaking down signifiers and characters representing traditional gender constructs. By purposefully not revealing too much through my minimalistic use of layers and shapes, my paintings create space for viewers to observe and reflect on these iconic symbols in a neutral space.

Her work is best known for bold, colorful paintings rooted in the realm of Pop Art, but with an eye for minimalist abstraction and a sense of immediacy and movement influenced by her early training as a photographer. Oliver adds a feminist perspective to the Pop Art genre, exploring gender roles and stereotypes by breaking down symbols into minimal, neutral forms that can be observed and reflected in new ways. Oliver’s works have been shown at much galleries across the worlds including the US, Canada, Brazil.
